Bio

  • About Me: Singer and guitarist Scott Von Heldt (aka: SVH) joins a new breed of heavy music and offers up a glimpse into the future of the primitive. From entrancing tribal rhythms to unparalleled vocal incantations, SVH has long been admired by his peers and continues to push the envelope to create music with unrelenting passion and intensity. Scott broke out into the original metal scene of Northern Ohio at the age of 17 by releasing his first solo guitar record To Each His Own. SVH went on to join local metal giants Vatican (later renamed Marquis de Sade) and soon became a local guitar legend with the release of his second solo record Cries of Silence. In 1994 Scott gave his full attention to the formation of his new band Theater of Madness. The group went on to dominate the local music scene, releasing their debut CD The Demo and opening for national acts ranging from Quiet Riot, Slaughter, and LA Guns, to metal masters more in their vein such as Suffocation, Anthrax, and Iron Maiden vocalist Bruce Dickinson among many others. After many years of trudging through the trenches in search of a record company, Scott formed his own indie label Dead City Records and began work on Mantra, the debut from a new and improved version of his former band now named KURAI. In 2002 he moved to Los Angeles and went on to join Ivan de Prume (White Zombie) and Martin St. Pierre (Cirque du Soliel) in the creation of HEALER, a band combining the elements of world music with modern metal! The bands debut Awakening has been hailed as one of the most original CD's released this decade and continues to garnish rave reviews. SVH recently lent his extreme vocal abilities to the Sheesh E.P. by local thrash/funk quartet Baron Von Sloth. In February of '09 SVH was chosen as lead guitarist and backing vocalist for former KoRn guitarist Brian "HEAD" Welch. The group toured lightly throughout 2009 and spent most of 2010 touring the US and Europe. In 2011 SVH did his last show with Head in New Zealand before resuming work on his solo career. He is an instructor as well as a staff writer for the popular guitarist social network ShareMyGuitar.com and the new tattoo and music culture magazine Tattooed Music. Scott continues to add a unique sentiment to heavy music by infusing raw intensity with spiritual insight and global awareness.

  • Robert Mathews I really don't worry so much about me or tend to pitch tantrums if I happen to ding my own stuff. Those things happen! It's the thoughtlessness of others that concerns and annoys me. I've gotten too old to beat on people who touch my stuff (Although earlier in my life  . .  ) and it's somewhat uncomfortable wearing a shoulder holster while I play!

  • GARY SKOPICK It took some searching, but I finally found the bottom cab for my Marshall. It's a 1960HWB, which is part of the hand-wired series, so I will now have a whole stack. Then we can get back to some more recording! Marshall is now doing their own distribution, and their warehouse must be in a state of chaos. Good luck if you need anything right away.  Mine arrives tomorrow. Should sound sweet!

DEFINITELY! The extra surface area really helps to absorb more of the force that the weight of the instrument it exerting on your shoulder and doesn't concentrate all that stress onto one part of the bone or muscles! Thanks for the HEADS UP!

Yeah man that's really how I got started writing music. I bought a cheap drum machine and would jam over beats. Then eventually I got a 4 track recorder so I could record seperate parts and then solo over them. I'll have to check out some of these!

    Thanks Homie!

Yeah I think age definitely factors in the overall scheme of relevancy for this topic, but then again guys like Billy Sheehan, Oz Fox (Stryper), and a host of others swore by the Gripmaster back in the day (which I always thought was a joke...till I got one). The idea of having independent resistance working each finger really worked and strengthening and loosening the hand. When I got into Kung Fu I was big on training the wrists and forearms and I also noticed how that really made my playing more solid and accurate. So I definitely think exploring the physicality of guitar playing can only make for a healthier approach.

Hey SMG family! I have been healing up from a repetitive strain injury to my fret hand from working over-diligently on some new akward chord structures. I have long been an advocate of stretching, excercising, and focusing on the muscle groups used in my playing and was curious if anyone else has any aches and pains associated with guitar playing and what steps you may have taken to heal the affliction. I know often shoulders and necks hurt from the weight of guitars (especially like a Les Paul etc.), wrists and hands get numb or sore, and I've even broken a foot at a gig.

I am a long time student of the healing arts and a dabbling herbalist and these days my focus musically is to merge the ferocity of my music with the healing power that lies behind it and inginite the harmonic synthesis. Anyway, I'm curious if any of you feel that health has any relevance in musicianship. I'd love to hear your Thoughts!

    Rev. SVH D.D.
