1) I all ways wash my hands before I play, 2)I wipe down the strings with a dry cloth when I'm done. I play a lot, but my strings, cheep GHS Boomers, last 3-4 months easy.
Another thing in regards some of the post above, I used to sell solvents for a living. Naptha is not lighter fluid, even though lighter fluid has a lot of naptha in it. Naptha and Acetone (fingernail polish remover) will weaken any adhesives, so if any gets into your neck it could hurt the glue between say a rosewood fretboard and a maple neck. Alcohol, denatured or rubbing is great, drys fast cleans well evaportates quickly.
